If you haven’t noticed, there hasn’t been a lot of activity on this website, nor any of King Lizzard’s social media sites, for several months.
In September 2017 King Lizzard was hospitalized with pneumonia and Stage C Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). Stage D CHF requires constant hospitalization and possibly hospice care. He spent three months in the hospital, much of that time intubated and in a coma.
On October 4th his condition was worsening, to the point where the doctors recommended to his wife that they turn off the ventilators and within 15 minutes he would be dead. Literally. The Queen was given a few days to decide.
Amazingly, within 24 hours, King started showing signs of recovery. The doctors then warned that even if he recovered he would suffer from brain damage because of the lack of oxygen and the fever.
Within a week King started gaining consciousness and the breathing tube was replaced with a tracheotomy (cutting the throat and inserting a breathing tube). For months King couldn’t talk and would communicated with a dry erase board.
Within a month he was able to talk with a voice box and begin eating solid food. After several months of being bed bound he had severe muscular atrophy, which meant he was unable to move his arms, hands or legs. He was moved to the rehabilitation wing where he was exercising vigorously for one month.
Bottom line, King was released from the hospital on December 8, in time for Christmas, and has regained most of the use of his arms and legs. He is learning to sing again, after having his throat cut, and is getting back to his old proficiency on the guitar.
To celebrate being 15 minutes away from actual death, King has written several uptempo songs and, providing there are no additional medical setbacks, plans to embark on a “Back From The Dead” mini-tour this summer.
Proof positive you can’t keep a good (or a bad) lizard down.
Stay tuned for more details.
